Biscuits Cookbook Review
Jackie Garvin of the Southern recipe blog, Syrup and Biscuits has come out with a fantastic cookbook, Biscuits: Sweet and Savory Southern Recipes for the All-American Kitchen. This cookbook covers the history of biscuits, simple biscuit recipes, and meals incorporating biscuits.
The beginning of the cookbook includes Jackie's own story, as well as the history of biscuits in America. I love reading up on the history of different foods and then making them, so this was the perfect way to start the cookbook! The next section of the cookbook goes over different tips, products you may need, and equipment you may need. This keeps someone from starting a recipe only to realize they don't have the right type of flour.
The first recipe chapter focuses on all the basic forms of biscuits. She even includes a gluten free biscuit recipe! I really liked that some of the recipes had step-by-step pictures. This made it much easier to follow along.
The remaining chapters have recipes for all kinds of biscuit variations and recipes using biscuits. She covers simple biscuit flavors like garlic cheese, and more exotic flavors like sweet potato. I loved the recipes using biscuits. Some of my favorites included, Spicy Pimento Cheese Bites (pg. 138), the Breakfast Garden Skillet (pg. 150), and the Pigs in a Biscuit Blanket (126).
This cookbook makes a great gift for all you favorite bakers and cooks. It will bring a smile to Grandma's face and will teach a new generation how to make a Southern specialty.
